Best Digital SSTV program right now appears to be EasyPal

  Hi Joanne,

Having been watching MMSSTV decoding pictures of a young Miss Claus (thanks
to I8LPR and EB5DZC) I am actually quite bitten by the SSTV bug. To be
honest I think that I should write my own SSTV engine(s), there's so much
that I would want to do that it becomes unfair to ask JE3HHT to add the
  support.

Today I have been adding picture support using MFSK16, this works very well
in receive, I must get the transmit side working. I expect that a protocol
such as MFSK16 will outperform analogue SSTV. I haven't looked to see what
protocol is used for digital SSTV.

At the moment I seem to be able to automatically decode Scottie, other modes
are not displayed properly. I am using the defaults for MMSSTV and have not
read any user guides. I'm using my Elecraft K3 as RX.

The MMSSTV engine seems to have some documentation or interface problems
inside it. But it handles an amazing number of variables that can actually
improve reception under various conditions. But, yeah, it goes a little
overboard.

Digital SSTV is pretty well covered by the EasyPal folks. They mostly hang
out on digsstv: mailto:digsstv-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

When digital works it works very very well. When it starts to drop out
the analog modes out perform. You CAN extract reliably information from
Analog under conditions that basically prohibit digital. (Most digital
is sent compressed. So any missing bits destroy the rest of the
picture most of the time. They try to use FEC to make up for it. But
that's not necessarily a good enough technique.)

Erik has done a pretty good job it appears.

Another thing to consider for treatment is "ALE". The hflink group on
Yahoo covers that.

I think you've already visited the DRM folks. There's a new mode for
that of late that is supposedly pretty good and uses 1.1 kHz of
bandwidth. It's based on melp-1400.

I've been following them for curiosity, mostly. I've not had time
to indulge ham radio much. Earning income comes first. {^_-}
