** Whirlpool Galaxy (M51): A Classic Beauty
M51, whose name comes from being the 51st entry in Charles Messier's catalog,
is considered to be one of the classic examples of a spiral galaxy. At a
distance of about 30 million light years from Earth, it is also one of the
brightest spirals in the night sky. A new composite image of M51, also known as
the Whirlpool Galaxy, shows the majesty of its structure in a dramatic new way
through several of NASA's orbiting observatories. X-ray data from NASA's
Chandra X-ray Observatory reveals point-like sources that are black holes and
neutron stars in binary star systems.

** NASA ANNOUNCES DISCOVERY OF ASSAULT BY A BLACK HOLE: Astronomers will
announce the discovery of a first-of-its-kind phenomenon involving a black hole
and a neighboring galaxy (Mon. Dec.17, 1 pm EST). Stay tuned for more! http://

**Chandra Blog: The Coolest Things in the Universe...or, Impressing Your
Co-Workers
by Dr. David Pooley on Mon, 12/10/2007 - 13:41.
Taking stock of the coolest things in the universe, I find black holes are at
the top of the list. Neutron stars are a damn close second. Supernovae are up
there, too, since (1) they produce neutron stars and (presumably) black holes,
and (2) they're enormous explosions. As cool as these objects are, they're
tough to study. Really tough.

**Chandra Podcast:
The Truth and Lies about Black Holes (11-30-2007)
Black holes have a bad reputation. After all, something that could swallow you
completely sounds pretty scary. They're invisible, so maybe there's one just
around the corner and we dont know it! Also, arent they enormous vacuum
cleaners capable of destroying anything that gets near them? Once the black
hole starts pulling on something, isnt that just a one-way ticket to oblivion?
Well, not all of these things are exactly true.
