Between 1959 - 1976 the Soviet Union launched 24 Luniks. Not all landed, not
all got there, some went into orbit or flew by but they did have Lunar Rovers
which returned .325 kg of moon rock to earth. All befor e the NASA landings.

If you want full Details, browse for Lunik Programme, that will get you to
Wikipaedia which is a start.

My reason for putting this out is that there has just been another programme
which only mentioned NASA and its Moon landings.

I have a DVD copied from a programme by the late Sir Patrick Moore which
compared Houston with its dozens of monitors and launch vehicles whic splashed
down into the Pacific because, unlike the Russians they hadn't mastered hard
landings. I also watched TV transmissions fron Soviet spacecraft and was very
impressed by the good quality of the transmissions using NIR, a version of the
SECAM V colour system, all there launches were cheaper and generally better
than the US ones. All this stuff can be found by going to the right websites
so I won't go into anymore detail.

The Russians are also planning landings on the Moon as well as, later, Mars
for further exploration. I wonder if there will be another space race ? I
don't care much as I probably won't be around when it happens.

Take care.
