Hi Ian and all,
You mentioned quite a few familiar authors, remember I said I must have
read every sci-fi paperback in Terminal B. (;->) Then too whomever ran
the bookstore wasn't all that familiar so a few odd fantasy stories got
mixed in there, all rather good though. Speaking of authors, have you
ever read L. Ron Hubbard? I don't remember the title of his most
(in)famous work, no, not Dianetics, but it held my interest only because
it was such a childish rambling that often got tangled around itself.
Somehow I don't think he intended comedy but that's what came out and it
only gets worse, they made it into a movie starring Johnny Revolting
(John Travolta). Yeah, Mr. Saturday Night Fever himself... eesh. Oh, I
just remembered... Battlefield Earth.
As an aside, failing at writing he had to come up with a solid source of
income so he did, he founded the "Church" of Scientology based on his
research of North Korean brainwashing and mind control techniques during
the war. Now C Corps does the work sending out their Manchurian
Candidates gathering funds and new recruits for the cult and guess who is
their chief celebrety spokesman. (If you miss this one it'll be raining
frogs.) Perhaps Elron Mother Hubbard's most famous quote is "If you want
to get rich start a religion." and for once in his life the man was right.
Eh, if M*A*S*H has an offensive Klinger then why is it still running on
the TV Land channel and ever popular as always? (Rhetorical question.)
Nah, he's not illegal here at least, Americans aren't all THAT uptight or
to use a more modern term... anal. As far as Spearchucker Jones went
football had rather little to do with all those blatantly racist remarks,
that's what had me wondering how they got away with things that
embarrassed me even then. It was quite a contrast to the Norman Lear TV
productions like All In The Family that were loaded with them BUT in a
very different context that made them funny coming from that lovable
bigot Archie Bunker. Then George Jefferson had his own arsenal... those
were the days.
Well Daffy, I ended on a pun, my my.
