Hi Ian and all,
You reminded me of my days as a parking lot tolls cashier at Newark
(Liberty) Intnl. Airport on the 11-7 shift. Being nothing flies between
2:00 and 6:00am I had time on my hands between those hours and read every
sci-fi paperback I could find in the bookstore at Terminal B. No
frustrated wife in the toll booth... heh heh heh.
Like I said, since I haven't seen B5 in years there's little detail I
remember but the stories centered around Earthers so it comes as no
surprise a US penny would fit in somewhere. ST was similar with Starfleet
HQ in San Fransisco, but how did the Bay Bridge manage to survive so
long? (;->)
Speaking of women in tin foil uniforms, about the corniest movie I ever
saw next to Plan 9 was something about an Amazon society on Venus with
Zsa Zsa Gabor as their queen. Don't ask what it was, I laughed the title
right out of me.
Right, in Duck Dogers women were portrayed as competent leaders and
military personel, same with the original Battlestar Galactica. Art
imitates life, around that time they were coming into their own and today
have gained quite a foothold. We have a lady cop in this one horse town,
cute as the proverbial button and anything BUT butch. Oh, before I forget
Duck Dogers, the most memorable character was Princess Our Dollar, neat
bit of symbolism... wot?
Yeah, like you I never had any particular interest in sword and sorcery
regardless of the setting, those TV shows were cornier than Iowa in
August.
Right and wrong depending on the brand of Communism. Marxism failed
simply because Karl's basic tennents were set aside in favor of a mixed
up form of Socialism, inequitable from the start. On the other hand
Maoism works well for China because they have lived under one form of
Communism or another since ancient times. Having been refined over all
that time they have a system that works as it always has. On the other
hand Capitalism will fall sooner or later because there is no mechanism
in place to restrain greed, nuff said.
Right, again art imitates life be it credits, Quatloos or whatever
un-named cashless system hinted at in Star Trek there are always hints of
Earth even in the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Well, people need a
point of reference or they'd get lost, I'm waiting to receive TV from
Andromeda just to see the other side of Lost In Space. (;->)
