COMMENT: NOAA AR 11387 and 11388 (no Catania number) produced several
C-flares in the past 24h. The most prominent flare yesterday was a C8.9
flare produced by NOAA AR 11386 (no Catania number) at 04:22 UT. This
eruption was accompanied by a CME observed with the coronographs onboard
both the STEREO and SOHO spacecrafts. A first estimate of its speed lies
around 800 km/s. A glancing blow from this event is possible late on
December 29th.
We expect possible unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions later
today and tomorrow due to the arrival of several CME's on December 25
and 26 and a high speed solar wind stream from a coronal hole. The first
arrival signatures are currently visible in the ACE data. The solar wind
speed is increasing but still low (<300 km/s) and total interplanetary
magnetic field is climbing towards 15 nT. For now its southward
component is still positive, so geomagnetic conditions are quiet at the
moment.
TODAY'S ESTIMATED ISN : 064, BASED ON 06 STATIONS.
