COMMENT: Solar activity picked up significantly now NOAA AR 1225 and
1226 are turning over the east limb of the Sun. This last region was
responsible for 5 C-class flares yesterday and produced 8 more C-class
flares today. The strongest of these was a a C8.3 flare peaking at 03h15
this morning. A CME was detected by STEREO A and B yesterday around
18h09, possibly linked to the C5.6 flare from AR 1226. We expect more
C-class flares, also an M flare is possible.
We are currently experiencing a geomagnetic storm with local Dourbes
and planetary K indices reaching up to 5 and 6 respectively. These
geomagnetic storm conditions are caused by the arrival of a high wind
stream from a recurrent coronal hole and possibly also the arrival of a
CME that occurred on May 25th. The solar wind speed is ~500 km/s and the
southward component of the magnetic field reached a value of -10 nT. In
the coming hours more active periods are expected.
TODAY'S ESTIMATED ISN : 050, BASED ON 10 STATIONS.
