COMMENT: Catania sunspot group 26 (NOAA AR 1169) produced a C3.7 flare
peaking at 20:34 UT yesterday. The associated CME (first seen in the
SOHO/LASCO C2 field of view at 19:12 UT) was not directed towards the
Earth. As the Catania sunspot group 29 maintains beta-gamma
configuration of its photospheric magnetic field, an M-flare is still
not excluded in this active region (although it is unlikely). Due to the
position of the Catania sunspot group 26 close to the west solar limb,
a
strong CME originating in it may lead to an energetic particle event at
the Earth. Catania sunspot group 29 (NOAA AR 1173) continues to grow and
may produce flaring activity at the C-level. The Earth is currently
inside a slow (around 400 km/s) solar wind flow with a slightly elevated
(8-9 nT) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude. As the IMF is
steadily directed northward, we expect quiet geomagnetic conditions.
TODAY'S ESTIMATED ISN : 028, BASED ON 02 STATIONS.
