Re the cost of installing solar power on rooftops of private houses, I got
the following from a friend who has just had it installed.:::
>There are umpteen Solar Power providers around with prices for a 1.5Kw system ranging from about
$2000-$3000 including Government subsidies. The latter are being scaled
back by about $1200 from July, although it would be necessary to sign up
some 3 months before that to "get on the list". The prices seem to vary
depending on the source of supply of the inverter and the solar panels
themselves. We have opted for a German made 1.7Kw inverter which comes
recommended for low RF noise based on the experience of at least one ham
who is a keen VHF operator, plus other recommendations. The panels are by
Suntech which are made by a Chinese crowd who also come with good
recommendations. Our system is costing $2990 plus a charge from Western
Power to change the meter to a digital type. So for every unit generated
you save that cost (about 20c),plus if you generate more than you are
using at any time you get credited 47c/unit for the power "bought" by the
supplier. At the cost of the system the savings produced are a bit better
than keeping the money in the bank and you don't have to pay tax on bank
interest, depending on your circumstances. If you
have a low power bill in the first place (like yourself with the low gas
bill), you may pay off the system relatively quickly and even eventually
enjoy a positive balance on your electricity account!>
From the above it can be seen that the cost in this state at least is not
very high.
