Dave, this is one reason I have never got a solar hot water system. I know
they are supposed to work in cloudy weather but My kids tell me they still
have a substantial power bill. With several having showers, the booster has
to be put on frequently and the power bill is still high. However from
comments I have seen on packet it seems our power bills in this state are
much lower than yours. Our power is supplied by a semi state system and
Governments lose votes if they increase costs too much.
My hot water system is a computerised one where I can, on a small panel
set the temperature I want. For a shower I set it at 45C in winter and 44C
in summer. Normal hot water systems, gas or power, mean that the water is
heated to a high degree and cold has to be put in for showers and such as
washing up. Temperatures as high a 100C can be there. With this system you
set what you want and save the cold water. I estimated that when I put
this in my gas bill shrank quite noticeably. The computer board cost an
extra $135, well worth the installation.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.

>Don't think that solar hot water is totally cost free, as the daily sun
lately, is on a 50% daylight / overcast activity and worse with winter
looming. This necessitates switching on, the offpeak2 electrical boost.
But there are now rumblings, that electricity suppliers will do away with
off peak, no doubt to offset losses by solar.
