Hi Ian and others,

The company I work for insists that all PCs have to have their disks
totally erased before disposal. The software that we use comes as a CD-ROM
image, as most of the PCs these days no longer have a floppy drive.

The program we use is referred to as "PC Discwipe". I'm not sure who makes
it, but an 80 Gigabyte drive takes about 3 hours to wipe. This is claimed
to be to US military standards., and supposedly ensures that confidential
information that was on the PC can not be recovered.

Each sector of the is overwritten a minimum of 5 times, with the heads
being repositioned between each write cycle o allow for variations in
positioning.
