You can find more news of Carter's passing elsewhere; this is just an anecdote.
Soon after I was licensed as KD3OA, Carter was bugging me to upgrade from
Advanced, so I could change my callsign to something less similar to
his. I did eventually upgrade, but I kept my callsign.
I remember one time I checked in to the EPAEPTN. I knew Carter was often active
there, and I hoped to meet him on the net. However, he was missing that
evening. This is how it went:
NCS: "Looking for additional check-ins to the EPAEPTN."
Me: "KD3OA. No Traffic."
...several seconds of silence...
unknown station: "He's legit! I met him!"
NCS: "You know your callsign is very similar to a regular check-in here."
Me: "Yes, I know. I was hoping to meet Carter here."
There was a little conversation after that. Carter was not on the net that
time.
Eventually, Carter was able to change his callsign to N3AO, keeping his
suffix, but removing the similarity to my callsign.
73, Chris, KD3OA@KA3BVJ.#EPA.PA.USA.NOAM
