TRUMAN MARKUS BENSON, N0KCQ
Truman Markus Benson was born in Elliott, Illinois on December
30, 1916 to Truman Harvey Benson and Tilie Johnson-Benson. He
passed from this life on February 10, 2013 at the age of 96 at
Golden Living Center in Odessa, MO.
He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his parents and three
sisters. He is survived by three daughters, Eleanor Smith of
North Pole, AK, Carol Yeager of Kansas City, MO, Catherine
Maynard of Howard Lake, MN, one son, Melvin Quick of Odessa, MO.
At an early age, Truman's family moved to Callender, IA where he
started school. His father was a Lutheran Minister and served
churches in Elliot, Il, Callender, McCalsburg and Rake, IA.
Truman graduated from Rake High School in 1934.
After his father's passing in 1936, he and his mother moved to
Minneapolis, MN. After completing an electronics course with RCA,
he worked for a small electronics manufacturing firm that
specialized in audio equipment. About two years later, he was
offered space in a hardware store in Belmond, IA for a radio
service shop. He then moved to Belmond, but with the pending war,
vacuum tubes and repair parts were becoming difficult to obtain
and expensive, so he closed the shop and moved back to
Minneapolis.
In 1942 he began working for Northwest Airlines in the Aircraft
and Communications Maintenance Department.
Besides the Aircraft and Radio Maintenances, he worked with
Engineering on System Design and installation for the aircraft
that were being converted to airline configuration involving
Douglas DC-3s, DC-4s, DC-6s and DC-7s. This became a full time
job so he was loaned to Engineering and in 1948 he was
transferred to Boeing Seattle. He work there 2 years during the
purchase of the Boeings and was then transferred back to
Minneapolis (1950).
In 1956 he moved to Kansas City, MO to work for Wilcox Electric
where he designed Communications/Navigation Systems for light
twin aircraft as well as the Eastern Airlines Lockheed L-1011
and the Douglas DC-6 & 7 aircraft.
Later he was hired by Collins Radio of Cedar Rapids, IA and went
to work in their Dallas, TX facility. New technology was
constantly coming out with more sophisticated
Communications/Navigation/Flight Control Systems. He incorporated
these systems into the Presidential Fleet and other 707s. Many of
the installations were accomplished "On Sight" which required a
lot of traveling.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Snapps Bearden with
