Hi Pete and all.
I got a book to keep up to date with digital systems and LCD,Plasma etc.
Always useful but I don't remember reading about 8VSB. I knew we had COFDM
over here and assumed it was everywhere.
In addition, John G8MNY has put out an excellent explanation of COFDM in
one of his bulls.
As for that Yankee standard, it reminds me of how I annoyed a couple of
Canadians once when I mentioned that, out of the three main colour TV
systems SECAM was the bes, PAL was good but over complicated and NTSC was
the worst. I should have realised that Canada would have adopted the
system from their neighbours to the south. We should have adopted the
system of the nearest country to the east, France but we adopted the
German instead.
As you say it is all a matter of money. I have suspected for years that
when it came to which system to adopt in 1962, there was probably
politics, bribery and corruption involved - pretty well the same thing
really.
Even now, my digital TV and digital STB still have the option of scanning
for PAL or the MESECAM channels
The reason is never explained but, just possibly, the fact that we have
3m Muslime Asians in the UK and, as I know from trips abroad, many more in
France, Spain, Italy and Austriam would explain it, they tend to watch
programmes from the Middle East (hence ME SECAM they use SECAM V) as their
basic system) either by satellite or on DVDs.
A few items do have NTSC as an option like a Video camera I have (not
digital); very useful if you are going to the USA unlike a friend of mine
who went once and hired a camcorder over there. When he got back and his
tapes would not work on his PAL TV he found out that he would have to pay
a lot of money to have them re recorded to work in the UK./
The moral is, if you are going abroad, take your own camcorder then you
know it will work back home.
As for the HD. After advice on here, I rescanned both my TV and my STB
looking for Freeview (DTB TV) in HD but could not find channel 55 which is
the BBC HD channel, in fact it jumps from ch 49 to ch 70 so it looks as
though we aint got HD in my area yet. No big deal, the pictures are all P5
and quite high res according to that test card.
As I said in my last bull: I am more interested in the programme content
than the technical quality which is abysmal.
