Hi Pete and all,

Funny you should use that term, the first "big switch" was some years ago
when a couple of Philadelphia TV stations swapped channels. Anyway, when
it came to the money grab thank Motorola, they lobbied the FCC for 8VSB
over the superior COFDM and Canada went along for the ride on a
compatible modulation scheme. Here's the rub, having dumped a small
fortune into development of COFDM money wasn't wasted, we sold it to
Europe where it works extremely well.

You're not the only one to lose channels, 8VSB requires a much stronger
signal and being all or nothing if the signal is weak you get nothing.
Then many TV stations changed to UHF and the spectrum rebanded (700MHz is
now public service) so you won't find all of them where they were. In
North America perhaps a better title for this thread should be The Big
Fiasco.

Just to add to the fun cable is going digital, a similar fiasco to OTA.
Remember it requires stronger signal, cable companies after supplying
converters discovered they had to go farther than just replace equipment,
they have to "fix" a previously working distribution system. Get this,
Comcast advertizes guaranteed prompt and improved service yet it took
nearly two whole months to fix the mess they made of it. (:-<)

Well, that's the latest in my series of DTV rants and now the big
question. What happened to the HD in HDTV? OK Australia, we already heard
from you (;->) but what I want to know is were all those Sony cameras
worth the expense?
