I did read somewhere that big countries, like parts of Russia, still have
analogue TV. The reason being that, with a weak aerial signal the analogue
picture just gradually fades out an gets noisy where DTV is either there
or gone so you can get by with an admittedly grainy picture.
Some, correction, one of the analogue systems does behave better long
distance than our German PAL and the US NTSC, that is SECAM. One of the
advantages of storing a line while showing a line means that you only get
about half the noise as the other two which might be one of the reasons
the Russians chose SECAM, it gives a sort of nois cancelling effect
similar to DTV. I had thought that Canada, being a large country might
have hung on to analogue except for the cities. Britain has been totally
digital for a long time now but the average punter just accepts the hype
about it being better.
