Hi Dave and any others interested..
" By the way I recently bought a Sony Video Camera, a tiny thing as they
are now, (put it in your pocket), that has the facility to record in STD
or HD. The latter using much more of the solid state recording medium.
The picture result in HD, is breath taking, on my 46" LED backlit, LCD
1080 TV.
Not sure why you are using a set top box on a large TV you bought
recently Ian, as all tv's sold here are HD capable, also with Plazmas
falling by the wayside! " - end quote.
------------------------------------------
The reason for the STB is simple, Dave. It has a PVR and the TV doesn't.
I have been time shifting since the 80s, first with VCRs the DVD - RW and
now with PVR which is, of course, better. If I FF at 60x then 1 min = 1
second so I count to 3 and am usually through the adverts.
I think a lot of people do this. When a set becomes available with a built
in HDD and I can afford it, then I will lose the STB.
As for a dedicated video camcorder, I did have one once but that was
before HD and now, like most people, I just take stills and some video
with my mobile 'phone. I have 2 USB skts on my TV and STB as well as other
inputs but nothing to connect my 'phone with.
In a way this saga reminds me of a customer of mine back in the 80s, She
had bought a new radiogramme from us with a little light to show when it
was receiving in stereo. The light had pcked in but the sound was still
obviously good stereo, which I demonstrated to her. " I still don't know
if it is stereo without the light !" she wailed. Sadly, access to the
little LED was a major undertaking and I had to call back and take the
heavy stereogramme the 15 miles to our workshop where the engineers had
plenty of time to take it to bits and replace the LED. Naturally, she was
perfectly entitled to have her radio working perfectly but what amused me
was that she had paid more for a stereo and, like a lot of people at the
time, couldn't tell mono from stereo. In a way I feel a bit embarrassed
not being sure whether my pics are really HD but my excuse is my bad
eyesight. The picture quality is and was very good as was the analogue TV
before it as I happen to be in an area with a collossal signal from two
transmitters so the analogue was as good as you could get with no noise
and, DTV of course, has no noise but very rarely gets the usual digital
faults.
All in all, I am satisfied. Thanks very much for the reply.
All the best, Ian.
