Re whether or not one is actually seeing a high definition program, is
I find very problematic too.
Firstly one can go to 'info' with the HD TV and it will tell you
whether the station itself is STD or HD, BUT that does not mean that the
program itself is in HD?
Many of these HD stations, which of course need an HD capable TV or set
top box, to even see the them, transmit many of the old shows and movies
from the 60's, even black and white classics. These of course were not
filmed in HD, so here it seems one is being led up the garden path, by an
HD station, having folk thinking that all one sees is HD!
Here in VK, early runs of HD material, had a watermark icon in the top
right hand corner of the show titled HD, but unfortunately it burned that
mark on Plazma screens.
To add drama to things, a show would preface in STD and after a few
minutes change to HD. Much like in the old movie days, where a new color
movie would start in 4x3 format and then go into (OO AHH!) widescreen
Vista Vision.
By the way I recently bought a Sony Video Camera, a tiny thing as they
are now, (put it in your pocket), that has the facility to record in STD
or HD. The latter using much more of the solid state recording medium.
The picture result in HD, is breath taking, on my 46" LED backlit, LCD
1080 TV.
Not sure why you are using a set top box on a large TV you bought
recently Ian, as all tv's sold here are HD capable, also with Plazmas
falling by the wayside!
The other sorry aspect was, that many folk opted for 3d capable
sets paying up to $1000 more, whereas now 3D has been turned off here and
folk finding that it was only a trial. Big stores had special viewing
rooms to attract purchasers to this medium. Now the push is to sell
Broadband capable sets.
They tell us now that you can still have 3D from BLU-RAY DVD's, but
requiring an expensive player, or maybe even more costly a BLU-Ray
player/recorder.
Well that is my contribution Ian and it will be interesting to hear from
more technical folk than myself.
