A week ago my DTB set top box went bang! so I was forced to replace it
with one of the cheapest I could find which, of course, is HD. I bought
the HDMI cable though they are not always ready, plugged in and changed
theVideo settings on my 'HD Ready' 42 " LCD TV. It was showing 576p and I
changed it to 1080i @ 16:9 aspect ratio with the SCART op set to RGB.
I have switched between HDMI and Scart i/p just to check as both are
connected but leave it on DPMI.
My question: Why does it not seem all that amazing ? I should point out
that my eyesight is not exactly HD, that is why I changed from a 22" TV to
the 42" a couple of years ago.
I have seen HD on, for example, the screen of someones video/still camera
the resolution was noticeably better so it was possible 'just' to tell by
eye that it was HD, even on a small screen, close to.
When I set up the STB it automatically scanned all the available channels
but did not label them 'HD' just the names of th channels like the old one
did which was the same make a SAGEM, made in France but not too bad for a
cheap STB.
I wonder if I expected too much. With all the repeats it is quite possible
that most of the stuff was shot on a lo - def format but the studio stuff,
especially on the BBC channels should be definitely HD. It is good enough
to see individual spots and whiskers but so was the last one.
Even so, large screen movies, especially the 70mm stuff should appear much
better but don't seem to. Perhaps I was expecting too much....
Any suggestions/ advice welcome.
