I think you're thinking of Foyle's War, Peter.
Nt a bad series. It sounds as though it might be quite old but I had never
seen it before so it was new to me. It has just finished BTW.
As for the tale of two pilots, I can well believe it. When I was in a
certain gliding club during the '70s, there were two pilots who had fought
in WW II. They were the best of friends though Helmut had flown a ME 109
and George had flown a Spitfire.
To hear them talk you would have thought they were on the same side even
though they could well have shot at each other at one time.
