Hi Paula and the Pirates,
Funny that, I too was too young at the time to realize vivrators don't care
about DC or AC nor did I know that by shorting two socket terminals the radio
would run on AC without the vibrator. The first transformer I ran mine off of
was from my model train set, a Lionel Z or maybe the newer ZW, don't
remember. Check Google Images, they're pretty cool looking but clumsy things
to power a radio. I found something more practical, the power transformer
from a TV (Remember valves?) and found the mother lode where I got it, the
scrap pile behind the local radio/TV shop. About that time there was a ham
cartoon about an XYL buying parts. The counter man looked puzzled, what's a
selemium rectum fryer? That unforgetable one is prime 7+ fodder but it lives
only in my memory. Oh, almost forgot that solid state (multi)vibrators came
out just around the time car radios were transitioning to solid state, did
they have hybrids over your way? There for a short time they had germanium
audio stages and tubes that ran with 12V on the plates, I still have a power
output transistor on my key ring with a tooth mark on it. The short story is
a dog with a broken tooth, torn bloody pants and a scar. Missed them by THAT
much.
Oh, OK, right about the pirate radio ships gone down in the back pages of
history but OH WOW, they left an indellible mark. Oh and before I forget,
check out WBCQ on line and see if they have their streams back up. You can't
get the radio signal beamed southwest out of Massachussettes (sneaky buggers
and FCC loopholes) but you'll enjoy the programming when one of the Bible
thumpers or survivalists isn't on the brokered air time. "Radio with the free
speech difference." is alive and well legally this time, the pirate ship is
mothballed but still broadcasting. I hope you can catch Radio Timtron
Wprldwide, Tim Smith WA1HLR is an old friend since 1965 when the 75M AM
window became a circus. Long story, but he's not a lid, the AM Gangstas are
highly entertaining and Tim has a great taste in music PLUS he speaks his own
language, fozizzle, or hood talk for "for real", not a radio personna, that's
Timtron. Yeah, there's a time difference but I'm reasonably sure your
electronic wizardry can time shift the program, you'll love listening to
pirate radio again. One last thing, Saturday evenings are home to Johnny
Lightning, one of the original pirates and a talk show to end all talk
shows... that is if you can understand a thick Brooklyn accent that could
keep Sylvester Stallone guessing.
