Hi Paul and AAARRR,

Ah yes, you had the pirate ships, we had landlubbers except for one, WRNI,
Radio New York International. Another long story for the Googlers to look up
but Ian, Brits aren't the only ones to fight the law and win. You got 11M CB
legalized but Alan Weiner, the kingpin of the pirate ship anchored off Long
Island, New York managed to go legal and is now behind WBCQ in Monticello,
Maine. Now there's a boy with a dream, having a rich daddy helps too.

Oh yeah, those were the days and those were some famous pirates but guess
what, Europirates haven't gone anywhere but underground. Same here but mostly
on shortwave where the FCC knows where to look but seems they don't care much
as long as they don't interfere with licensed services. They're real quick to
bust FM pirates though, they don't realize the interference they cause and
people complain.

That must have been some adventure visiting Caroline and London, check the
movie The Ship That Rocked if you haven't already, glorified but
entertaining. They rocked alright, it got worse in those famous North Sea
storms so they had tone arms like juke boxes to keep them from skittering all
over the records. Are you kidding? They wouldn't pass health and safety
regulations in Angola let alone the UK! (;->)

Oh, one last thing, pirates are sneaky lil' fellers. One famous hijack was
when a pirate took over a BBC relay by planting a transmitter near the
installation tuned to the relay link frequency. Wonderful wonderful having a
250KW transmitter at least until they found the "bomb". A version of that
technique is common in urban areas, a remote transmitter hidden on a rooftop
with a radio link from the studio so when Ofcom finds the transmitter that's
all they found, easy enough to replace in a different spot.
