Yes I too can remember the pirates (Radios Caroline, London and Essex)
prior to 1967....

In the early days I listened on an amplified crystal set, as I couldn't
afford a proper radio.

Sometimes I listened on an old Pye car radio which was set up in the garage,
powered from a spare car battery. It was an all-valve radio with a vibrator
HT generator, and it used to flatten the battery after a couple of hours.
My parents would tell me off for wasting electricity to charge the battery.

The BBC spoiled it all by killing off the pirates in 1967. Radio 1 was never
as good, because the attraction of the pirates wasn't just the music, it
was the whole ethos of something new, fresh and slightly naughty.

And yes, I knew a boy locally who used to make pirate broadcasts using ex-WD
equipment that he used to buy for a song at the local army surplus store
(now that was a fascinating place :-)

73, Paula
