Hi Ian and all,
The federal limit on Amateur tower height has nothing in common with it
falling outside the property line, the setback vs. height rule is part of
a local building code. That business about the CB antenna vs. the Council
sounds familiar, a nearby ham built a portable ground mounted vertical he
only sets out when operating. So far the HOA Nazis haven't made an issue
of it as they often do in other stories I've heard.
When the digital transition was first announced the government had a
subsidy on set top converters making them "affordable" (;->) but that has
long passed since the transition has likewise. Makes sense ( somethging
unusual for the government) since if not for the subsidy The Big Switch
would be known as The Big Screw. Eh, so far though Washington is a box of
nuts and I haven't found a bolt in the lot but Australia is the exeption
and his name is Andrew. (Do your homework, you'll get the joke.)
Oh I know what CCCP stands for and it's one of life's little ironies. The
Soviet Union may have been a council of socialist republics but in name
only, the practice was Marxism (Communism) with the root philosophy of
each according to his abilities and each according to his needs. Frankly
I don't want the state dictating either but I digress. I suggest reading
Marx's Communist Manifesto, I have and never saw anything about Socialism
in it.
My point was that Americans are essentially clueless about either having
been brainwashed from birth never having taken the essential step of self
education. One must go beyond what is taught because the truth was never
and will never be taught! Mention the simple fact that the US is a
Socialist state with Socialist states within just like CCCP and all
you'll get is a mindless dispute. So why do we pay taxes? What are the
funds used for? Mister America knows but thinking himself as Captain
America his mind boggles at the answer he'll never realize the meaning of.
You reminded me of a chuckle from the 60s, about the time Israel started
the brief kibbutz system of farming settlements we had the very same
thing, hippie communes. Hey, commune is the root word of Communism isn't
it? Maybe that's why the establishment called them hippie weirdo pinko
punks among other things unprintable. (;->) Funny how nary a word was
said about darling Israel...

Interesting you should mention who mum refered to as Uncle Fidel
referring to my QSL card from Radio Habana and the Feliz Ano Nuevo cards
I got every year. As an aside, every "par avion" envelope that came in
the mail was stretched outward yet contained only the card making me
wonder what the government spooks removed. What struck me as comical was
they took so much trouble to steam it open and reseal it trying to make
it look unopened while it was so obvious it was literally stuffed when it
left Havana. Gotta hand it to Fidel, he remained in power far longer than
any of his contemporaries, the old fox really had it going while the rest
either died or faded into history.
