I have meant to reply to the opinions on the height of Amateur aerials for
a while. Here in the UK the legal maximum is 20 meters (70 feet in real
momey), we all learn that for the RAE Radio Amateurs Exam.

The height is reduced with in one Km of an airfield. Nothing about falling
on a neighbour's property. I do remember a woman near me during the height
of CB fever in the 80s who was told to take her CB AE down. I found a rule
which said that this height rule only applied to 'permanrnt' structures so
I suggested she attach her AE to the washing pole with quick release
clamps. She did this and when the man from the council called round she
demonstrated that it could easily be removed and stowed, making it a
temporary structure. She was grudgingly allowed to keep it. She did live
in a council house and was at risk of eviction if she broke any one of a
number of council rules. People in private housing were usually left
alone.

As for set top boxes for digital reception. When this was first announced,
people were told that, if they could not afford a digi box then, because
they paid TV licences and that constituted a contract with the BBC, a
government organisation, which was obliged to supply them witha picture,
they would be supplied with a free digi box.

I don't know of anyone who took up the offer. As I have explained, my
reason for the recent change of digi box is because, like the last one, it
contains a PVR so that I can easily time shift and record things while I
am out.

I like the discussion on capitalism v socialism. Our country has been
moving steadily toward the right in that, in many ways it resembles
America, e.g. Students now have to pay for tuition by taking out student
loans, a very large expense ! During the second half of the 20th century,
unuversity tuition was free but most students still had to take vacation
jobs to pay for luxuries like food and clothes.

The other two mainstays of our Welfare State, i.e. Health and Old Age
Pensions are not being attacked directly. They have both been there since
WW II.

In the case of the state pension, the massive 'grey vote' means that the
government interferes with the living conditions of the elderly at it's
peril. The same goes for our National Health Service. It has been picked
away at by successive governments for decades but not politician with half
a brain would dream of abolishing it. His party would never get in again.

As for Warren saying tha @Socialism leads to Communism@ that makes me
think that he just doesn't understand what they are. The old USSR or as
they put it CCCP standing for Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialistichemiye
Respublik =
Union of Councils of Socialist Republics - nothing there about Communism
at all. One socialist country which the US has never insulted was Sweden
and the only country with a form of Communism was Israel with it's
'Kibbutzim'.
All gone now I believe.

My lfe started with a war and went almost immedietly into another war, the
Korean war inted to stop the spread of the Evil Communism, the US lost and
so did we as we were forced to commit our British army over there.

Then they attacked their wartime ally Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam whic again,
they lost severely.

The war in former Yugoslavia, in which they helped the Muslime Albanians
take over control of all the states except for Serbia which was a
Christian country, allied with Russia.

The NATO troops were never withdrawn from the FYR BTW, they are still
there
but not as active as the US has been too busy in Iraq and Afghanistan but
those last wo are nothing to do wit 'fighting communism', they are all
about oil.

All this has always puzzled me as the average Brit doesn't see Communism
as something evil, in fact we had the Communist Party of Great Britain for
a long time but it was abit of a joke to most people.

Why the Americans should want to throw away millions of young men's lives,
not just American but British, Australian, South African and NZ. Don't
forget Canadian; completely baffles me. Greed for oil I can understand but
a political ideology ?

Viva Fidel.
