Hi all,
**** Please don't get you hopes up too much when you read this. It is just a possibility, not a
commitment. ***
However..
I did think that if I could find a telnet BBS I could use, and Renzo's mention of GB7COW looks like
a good possibility that I might try running Sally again. [edit: Ken has now given me access to
GB7COW telnet] So, on a quiet day when I had nothing much to do I decided to dig out the old
Sally code.
Problems...!!!
The first problem I ran in to was that I no longer have the source code for Sally 4. It was lost when I
replaced my old crashed PC. I had a backup DVD but it filed failed. The disk was totally
unreadable. An extensive search of all my other backups did not find anything usable. So forget
Sally 4 then...
Fortunately I still have the (incomplete) last attempt I made to produce a "Sally 7" version for use
with Windows 7, but it used the same support libraries I wrote for standard functions (like file
handling, registry functions and others) as Sally 4. These libraries were also lost!
I do have a later version of my libraries now combined into a single support dll file, but whilst this
dll provides all of the functions the old libraries use to provide, the implementation if rather
different, requiring some extensive re-writing of the Sally source code. If I can convert all these
library calls to use my dll instead, I could then look into completing the Win 7 version of Sally.
There is no possibility of testing any AX25 RF BBS functions (I no longer have any radio or packet
equipment) so its usefulness may be limited, but I might have a go at it. I remember there were a
number of unresolved problems with the Win 7 version when I originally gave up on it, and no
doubt there will be some problems that I am not yet even aware of. We shall see...
I enjoy programming, but I hope you can all appreciate there will be a lot of work involved, so it
may take some time and there is no guarantee that I will ever completed it. The time available to
"just sit and program" is limited these days. The wife often has other ideas of how to use my time!
Ted.
