Lisa, VK7SGZ, and Bruce, VK7SKY, set up for an activation in Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, home to Australiaâ€

Ös deepest freshwater lake, Lake St Clair, which reaches a depth of 167 metres. Lisa and Bruce were spotted operating on 40m du

ring the activation.

Matt, VK7MAT, headed out for a 2-fer activation of the Lake Trevallyn Water Management Area and Trevallyn Nature Recreation Are

a. Matt made 93 contacts in 65 minutes, operating on the 40m band. During the activation, Matt also put the CatTouch7 through i

ts paces. The CatTouch7 is a 7-inch touchscreen with CAT control for the Yaesu FT-891. The touchscreen and CAT control make the

FT-891 more intuitive and easier to operate, and following the successful field test, it looks set to become a permanent fixtu

re in Mattâ€Ös parks setup.

Ian, VK7IAN, headed to Blackmans Bay Beach, located at Blackmans Bay, featuring rocky areas and a blowhole. Ian logged 22 conta

cts, making this his fourth activation of the reference, with a total of 124 QSOs across the four activations.

Peter, VK7ZPE, Al, VK7AN, and Rodney, VK7HAM, headed back to Prossers Regional Reserve, located just outside Launceston between

Underwood and Nunamara. The 1,112-hectare forest reserve is home to the threatened tailed spider-orchid. The team was spotted

calling on 40m and was heard in VK2.

Thatâ€Ös it for another week, hope to catch you on the air.

Tassie Ham-E-Con Radio Conference
Bookings are OPEN!!

The countdown is on for Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026, and bookings are officially open. This year's theme, Hack the Ether: Education,

Ingenuity, Connection, captures the spirit of amateur radio at its best, where experimentation, innovation and lifelong learnin

g come together. Humans have spent more than a century finding increasingly creative ways to throw signals through the air. Thi

s conference celebrates that tradition while looking firmly toward the future.

Join amateurs, makers, educators, communicators and technical explorers from across Australia and the world for a fully catered

weekend. The conference program is built around four major streams: Hack the Mind exploring education and learning futures, Ha

ck the System showcasing ingenuity and experimentation, Hack the Culture focusing on community engagement and connection, and H

ack the Future examining leadership, purpose and where amateur radio goes next.

Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026 takes place on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026 at the iconic Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre on the UTA

S Sandy Bay campus. Pre-conference and post-conference activities have also been planned, making it a full weekend of radio, le

arning and networking. The preliminary program is now available and registrations are open via the conference website: https://

Last technical night, Ian VK7IH, brought in some new accessories for his recently purchased Icom IC-705. He definitely seems to

be going portable as he had purchased the backpack designed specifically for it. Apart from the 705 in the backpack, Ian also

included a 12 volt 18 amp hour Lithium battery and constructed a very smooth looking “DC Control Panel”, incorporating swit

ching for Master, Radio, Tuner and Auxiliary power feeds. This black control panel is well made and looks the part with its whi

te labelling. Did I mention it also has a voltmeter included for good measure and not a 3D printed item in sight, Hi-Hi. To com

plete the ensemble, Ian also obtained a portable tripod to mount his vertical antenna. A multiband, calibrated, telescopic, Dia

mond antenna complete with ground radials. There is also space on the tripod, below the ground radial distribution hub, to hold

his Icom antenna tuner, the finishing touch to a fully portable set up. Thanks Ian for a look at your almost completed “work

 in progress”.

Ross VK7ALH, arrived armed with three Kenwood TS-840 main processor boards, all for TS-840s but all a different version and in

this case all exhibiting different faults. His message was more of a “make sure you check your spare parts before you orderâ€

ť, as they may not be the ones you need, they could be the wrong version. These were the versions required, but it is a very go

od reminder and relevant to those, like Ross, that deep dive into repair work, and not just on transceivers. Ross took us throu

gh some of the interesting evolutions and modifications undertaken by the manufacturer, over the years, on these printed circui

t boards.

Throughout every version, one thing remained the same, hidden somewhere on each board was a ubiquitous Z80 microprocessor chip!

The Z80 was designed by Frederico Faggin and Masatoshi Shima and was publicly launched in July 1976. It stayed in production f

or 48 years, ending its run in 2024. Last month it turned 50! So Happy Birthday to the famous Zilog Z80 microprocessor.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH WEST
North West Coast Radio Repeater Association

The NWCRRA has once again integrated with the Tasmanian round of the Australian Rally Championship, held from the 14th to the 1

6th of August in forest reserves south of Burnie.

Association technicians applied their field expertise, equipment and high peak repeater 7RVP to the Subaru Wilderness Rally, wo

rking weeks ahead of the competition installing mobile radios for officials and building the rally's extensive communications n

etwork.

This year's rally saw the return of last year's twin 80 megahertz repeaters, built by the Association and installed at their St

Valentines Peak communications facility. At more than 1100 meters, the North West Coast's highest peak has been a repeater sit

e for over 70 years and the shack and tower on the summit houses the association's IP linked amateur repeater.

Dutiful preparations required the remote Peak to be climbed two weeks before the contest by four association members including

the president. Dion VK7DB was concerned about mountainous winter conditions affecting the battery system and the expedition ca

rried a petrol powered battery charger to the summit. The two kilometer climb with nearly five hundred meters of vertical and e

quipped with gear critical to make the site operational throughout the major motorsport event, made this expedition a substanti

al undertaking.

The battery was charged as the team installed both the repeaters and a voltage monitor on the power system, which showed flawle

ss performance over the entire deployment of the remote radio equipment.

Back at rally command and the service park, the association provided three communications nodes. Two were radioless nodes, conn

ected directly to the repeaters on the Peak via IP over Starlink. One accessed the primary 80 megahertz bush channel, while the

other connected to the separate safety channel. Two conventional radios were also installed at command to provide backup acces

s to both networks.

Field testing however, identified a critical issue. Portable radio coverage around rally command was found to be unsatisfactory

. Association technicians installed the third node using a low-powered simplex UHF frequency, linked in to the primary 80 megah

ertz bush network. Four mobile radios were supplied to officials, giving them reliable portable communications both at the serv

ice park and across the event. In the days leading up to the competition, approximately 20 mobile radios were installed into of

ficial vehicles.

NWCRRA members VK7ML and VK7DRE verified radio network operation in preparation for race day, field checking all radio points b

efore the triple zero car's launch of each stage.

Five members of the Association were directly involved during the rally, with three also working as radio operators at SOS and

road closure points. Operators used the repeater network to remain in contact during competition.

After considerable preparation and work by the NWCRRA, the result was faultless communications that performed exactly as intend

ed for the entire Subaru Wilderness Rally Tasmania.

>From the twin repeaters high on St Valentines Peak, through the IP-connected command equipment and the UHF service park node,
p
lus the mobile installations and operators positioned at the race, the Association's network drew high praise from event organi

zers and was a fine demonstration of what goes on backstage of a major motorsport event. Efforts to build, install, power, test

and maintain event critical radio gear - even on top of a remote mountain are simply whatâ€Ös required to make sure communicat

ions are reliable when itâ€Ös needed.

The Association is pleased to have once again assisted the North West Car Club and the Australian Rally Championship, and we th

ank all Association members and others who contributed their time and effort to making the communications operation a success.

August Forum Night - Dialog with the WIA

https://www.youtube.com/live/yLYGQxpG0OA?si=OoNqFTLtWdWEjuB5

WIA Vice President & Director Peter Schrader VK4EA and Director Justin VK7TW the audience through a slightly humorous presentat

ion titled “What Did the WIA Ever Do For Us?”
The presentation start with a little about the WIA that has been over the last 115 years, represented Australian radio amateurs

, helping shape licensing, protecting access to spectrum, supporting clubs, developing education and assessment resources, publ

ishing Amateur Radio magazine and representing Australia internationally through the IARU.

But amateur radio and the expectations of its community are changing. The Directors then went through the WIA's new SHAPE prior

ities for 2026–27 focus on Support, Help through Education, Advocate, Promote and Engage. Behind each of those headings are e

ight practical priorities: completing RES/WIA integration and extending services to affiliated clubs, establishing the opt-in V

KCallbook, improving communications, refreshing the WIA website, renewing education and syllabuses, strengthening engagement wi

th ACMA, improving contest consultation and management, and continuing spectrum management and technical support.

Perhaps the most important point is that the WIA isn't some enormous organisation staffed by an army of paid employees. It is r

un by more than 100 volunteers delivering services and representing amateur radio nationally and internationally. The challenge

now is not simply to preserve what the WIA has done for generations, but to modernise it, strengthen its relationship with clu

bs and members, encourage new amateurs and make sure amateur radio has a strong national voice for the future.

Take a look at the video of the forum night that his available on the link in the email edition of this broadcast.

Technology News
How Short is a Zeptosecond?

We routinely talk about milliseconds, and radio amateurs working with high-speed digital systems might even encounter microseco

nds or nanoseconds, but a zeptosecond makes those numbers look positively leisurely. One zeptosecond is 10âü»Â˛Âą seconds, or 0

.000000000000000000001 seconds. Put another way, there are a billion trillion zeptoseconds in a single second.

In 2020, researchers from Goethe University Frankfurt, DESY and the Fritz Haber Institute measured a delay of just 247 zeptosec

onds as a photon travelled across a hydrogen molecule. Using X-rays from the PETRA III synchrotron at DESY, the researchers stu

died the resulting electron-wave interference and determined the tiny difference in the time at which electrons were emitted fr

om the molecule's two atomic centres. The result, published in Science, represented the shortest time interval directly measure

d at the time.

Why bother measuring something so absurdly short? These techniques allow scientists to investigate some of the most fundamental

interactions between light and matter, including photoionisation and the behaviour of electrons inside atoms and molecules. It

's a remarkable reminder that while radio amateurs routinely measure signals in milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds, mod

ern physics is now peering into events occurring another twelve orders of magnitude below a nanosecond.
