VK7 Broadcast News
Mike Jenner VK7FB
We extend a huge thank you to Mike Jenner VK7 Floating Boat for his many many decades of service to bring you the WIA and VK7 Amateur Radio News.
I asked Mike when he first was involved in the broadcast and this was his reply….
“As near as I can work out, with the short wave listeners news in 1958, when I used to bus down to Hobart and find my way to whichever shack was doing the broadcast. VK7JB, Jack Bachelor, in Sandy Bay, or Bob Fulton, VK7AF - Bob and Toms Service Station, on the corner of Hampden and Sandy Bay Road. He lived above the garage.
There were some years when I was not involved, like when I was in the lighthouse service, but with gaps, something like a 66 year span....announcing or writing text or helping to produce the monthly bulletin or relaying, or transmitting on AM on 3672 or 7146 on the home brew transmitter. I have originated or rebroadcast the news from Hobart, Ralphs Bay, Cremorne, Prince of Wales Bay and maritime mobile from my boat right through the nineties, the Glebe, Howden, Blackmans Bay and Bellerive.
Regardless of where I was living, there would not be too many Sundays in the last 70 years when I would have missed listening to a broadcast!
WOW, on behalf of all amateurs a huge thank you to Mike for his many years of broadcast service.
Mike is taking a well earned rest but has said he is available for the occasional gap in the roster, thanks Mike!
This morning we also welcome Fran VK7FRN to the broadcast reading team and Fran will be reading the broadcast next week for the first time. Please make her feel welcome.

VK7 Broadcast News - Digital Broadcasts
Clayton VK7ZCR would Like to send a big thank you to the following radio operators for their help in 2024 to put the WIA National News and VK7 Amateur Radio News to air each week.
Phil, VK3PG, Ross, VK7WP, Gavin VK7HGO and Ian VK3JS for putting the DSTAR 91C broadcast to air.
Each Sunday morning we put the WIA National News on DSTAR 91C from 9-9:30am and then the VK7 Amateur Radio News to air on DSTAR and DM Talk Group 5 from 9:30-10:00 am.
In Hobart we have three DMR repeaters and two D-star repeaters so there are plenty of ways of listening.
There is VK7RCR in Lenah Valley, VK7RAK in Bridgewater and VK7RAD at the Queens Domain - which is currently off air.
We need more operators on the Digital channels on a Sunday morning so, if you listened on DSTAR and/or DMR and you would like to help out please contact Clayton at email:clayton7008(at)gmail.com.
Thanks for you help.
73, Clayton VK7ZCR

SSTV Nights
A busy first net for the year with the following participants, VK7s – ZGK, EV, ZAB, ZBX and ZCF all sharing nearly twenty photos.
The highlights were:
The last days of Christmas lights on a tower
A Nullarbor road trip with essential stops at the concrete ablutions
Australiaâ€Ös longest straight road
Dirt roads where Earth meets Space
The 2024 ARISS-USA Space Youth Program
A bread delivery bike from 100 years ago
One of the “T” model Fords touring Tassie
A local “classic” American car
A two stroke powered, four wheel “Esky”
A 3D printed base with forty recesses for connectors, fully populated with gold plated RF adaptors and a set of terminations for VNA calibration
A 3D printed base and lid with a set of dummy loads with an attenuated “sniffer” output. Is this a Christmas present for oneâ€Ös self?
And the Pink Panther sorting out the 2024 paper work
Note - Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.
If you missed the net there are archives of these SSTV nights.

We start this weekâ€Ös news with an update for John Deegan VK7JFD (SK) - From the latest information received, there will be a "Celebration of Life", type of service, to be held this Monday the 6th January at Franklin Grove, commencing at 10:30 am.
In case you missed the details, here they are again, a "Celebration of Life" service to be held this Monday the 6th January at Franklin Grove, commencing at 10:30 am.
On behalf of the NTARC committee.
Now some “House Keeping” for 2025:
As previously mentioned, an e-mail has gone out to all members regarding membership renewal options. By all means feel free to renew your membership. But importantly if you havenâ€Öt received the e-mail and you have checked your Junk folder, then drop an e-mail to the secretary from your preferred e-mail address and I can update any discrepancies.
Remembering back to the Australia Day contest for 2024, Peter VK7KPC, has finally received his 2nd place certificate for Single Operator C/W, one more for the club “brag book”, congratulations Peter.
Last Thursday on the State-Wide Slow Scan TV session, Colin VK7ZCF, broadcast some interesting images. It looks like he has been at it again and has produced more items from his 3D printer. This time there were a few variations of printed containers, each one having individual locations for things like in-line attenuators, dummy loads and RF adaptors. The RF adaptor version sported 40 individual holders and whatâ€Ös more they were all filled with RF adaptors. Now that sort of visual presentation of adaptors should spark some desire amongst us amateurs. HiHi We canâ€Öt wait to see the holders in the flesh, hopefully at the first Club Room Technical Night for the year.
Colinâ€Ös SSTV images of his 3D printing will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

Wednesday Experimenterâ€Ös Nights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQyF2AcK8mY
Last Wednesday night we wished everyone a happy new year and welcomed Ron VK7WRC into the studio to show off his latest project - an Arduino Keyer to support his CW learning journey. Ron uses the Morse Mania application on his android phone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.countrymania.morse&hl=en_AU
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/morse-mania-learn-morse-code/id1511042196
There is both a sending and receiving elements to the application and the sending is facilitated through the USB port and the kay or paddles are emulating keyboard characters.
Ron downloaded the github code and installed on an arduino board and put it all in a 3D printed case. https://github.com/Uppitydowney/morsekeyboard
After overcoming some initial issues Ron was able to plug in his Aliexpress paddle via the 3.5mm socket.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006679928703.html
Ron gave us a demonstration. This is similar to the CW Academy - VBand interface which is also a keyboard emulator that was demonstrated in an earlier WEGs night. Thanks Ron.
Justin VK7TW then took the audience through his SOTA Double Points Day activation of Mt Marian (double points) and then Trestle Mountain in the Wellington Range.
We then showed a USB Rechargeable LiPo Work Lamp and Torch.
We finished with a brief Space Weather Report and our future events.
This Wednesday night will be another WEGs night with some interesting experimentation, hysteric whoops historic items and stories of radio adventures.
People start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy.
There is always much discussion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shenanigans and world problem solving in the clubrooms as well!!
https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/
https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

We stream the nights from 7:30pm AEDST on the REAST YouTube streaming channel and we also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.
See you there or on the stream.

NASAâ€Ös Deep Space Network Upgraded
Installation of the latest antenna took place on Dec. 18, when teams at NASAâ€Ös Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California, installed the metal reflector framework for Deep Space Station 23, a multifrequency beam-waveguide antenna. When operational in 2026, Deep Space Station 23 will receive transmissions from missions such as Perseverance, Psyche, Europa Clipper, Voyager 1, and a growing fleet of future human and robotic spacecraft in deep space.
“This addition to the Deep Space Network represents a crucial communication upgrade for the agency,” said Kevin Coggins, deputy associate administrator of NASAâ€Ös SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) program. “The communications infrastructure has been in continuous operation since its creation in 1963, and with this upgrade we are ensuring NASA is ready to support the growing number of missions exploring the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
“With the Deep Space Network, we are able to explore the Martian landscape with our rovers, see the James Webb Space Telescopeâ€Ös stunning cosmic observations, and so much more,” said Laurie Leshin, director of JPL. “The network enables over 40 deep space missions, including the farthest human-made objects in the universe, Voyager 1 and 2. With upgrades like these, the network will continue to support humanityâ€Ös exploration of our solar system and beyond, enabling ground breaking science and discovery far into the future.”

The Race Condition
A race condition occurs when a system's behavior depends on the sequence or timing of uncontrollable events, leading to unpredictable or inconsistent outcomes. This issue is prevalent in electronics, software, and other systems where multiple operations execute concurrently without proper synchronization. The term "race condition" has been in use since at least 1954, notably appearing in David A. Huffman's doctoral thesis, "The synthesis of sequential switching circuits."
In electronics, race conditions often arise in logic circuits when signals traveling different paths from the same source reach a logic gate at slightly different times. This can cause the output to momentarily switch to an unintended state before stabilizing, potentially leading to system malfunctions, especially if the output serves as a clock signal for memory-containing systems. Design techniques like Karnaugh maps can help identify and eliminate such race conditions by adding logic redundancy.
In software, race conditions occur when multiple threads or processes access shared resources simultaneously without adequate synchronization, resulting in unexpected behavior or bugs. For instance, if two threads attempt to increment a shared variable concurrently without proper locking mechanisms, the final value may be incorrect due to overlapping operations. Implementing mutual exclusion through locks or semaphores can prevent these issues by ensuring that only one thread accesses the critical section at a time.
A specific type of race condition in software is the data race, which happens when two concurrent operations access the same memory location, with at least one being a write operation, and there is no mechanism to control their execution order. Data races can lead to undefined behavior and are particularly problematic in programming languages like C and C++, where they result in unpredictable program outcomes. Avoiding data races requires careful synchronization and adherence to concurrency best practices.
Race conditions are notoriously difficult to reproduce and debug due to their dependence on timing variations, making them elusive and often leading to intermittent issues. To mitigate race conditions, developers and engineers must employ proper synchronization techniques, thorough testing, and vigilant design practices to ensure system reliability and predictability.
