Hans,
Winlink is the linking software and packet radio or HF Pactor is the
delivery method. Winlink looks after the formatting of the email and the
routeing of it. Emails can be sent or received via Packet or Pactor. Your
email address would be XXXXX@winlink.org. Any emails to that address
would sit on the Winlink server until you log on, either via Packet radio
and a telpac node, or via Pactor and to your local PMBO or CMS (Personal
Mail Box Operator, now called Central Message Server).
The Telpac node is a computer with an internet connection, either
broadband or dialup. Telpac is a bridge/gateway from Telnet to Packet
radio. The Telnet part of it will connect to your local CMS where your
emails will be stored.
With HF Pactor, you make a direct connection to the CMS to pick up your
emails.
Sending emails is the reverse. Compose your emails, connect to the CMS
via Packet or Pactor and the software uploads them automatically.
It only gets complicated if you want a local packet network to access a
Pactor modem for long range CMS connection. For this you need a SCS modem
such as the PTCII which is expensive, but is the only cross mode modem
available I think.
I hope that helps,
73's
Graham
