VK7 REGIONAL NEWS BROADCAST
FOR SUNDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2007
---------------------------------------------------------------------

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN VK7

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through VK7 land
Repeaters were quiet
Not even Santa was on the band

He was preparing his echo-IRLP dual-cored sleigh
For the trip of lifetime – all in a day
His sack was full of noice new rigs
With licence upgrades for all and bands to play

VK7RAA was unusually still
Joe kept doing tests
With repeater ker-chunking
No activity, he guessed

VK7RAD/RHT were also silent
Dave was getting nervous
Bloody coax relay he thought again
Up to the Domain to give it a service

In the North West 7RMD was hushed
Nothing heard on 2metres
Where normally the airwaves
They would have just gushed

The year in review
Is what I intend to do
Santa needs to know
That VK7 bands they did glow

What a year for club NTARC
Stronger and stronger the club it has grown
Lilydale, Mt Barrow, the Bombay and Myrtle Park
Socially strong and widely known

In the North West is NWTARIG
Packet BBS, SSTV, ATV and broadcasts
The beacons now at Don Heads
The club growing from the year last

The DEC, Optical, NextG and much more
And those Moonraker antennas, oh what a beast.
Two Thousand and Seven
A great year for Club REAST

Thursday night it's the quiz night
CHARCT behind this institution
Also the biennial Hamfest at Miena
Many amateurs need credit card restitution

Support is WICEN's middle name
For the tarmac race, they call Targa
Along with Lighthouses, Horses and Fire combinations
Incorporated this group is bound to grow larger

The Sewing Circle Net supported Simbo
And wasn't that spectacular
The BBQ in Ross and Orielton went well
3.59MHz at 1700 in ham vernacular

BPL it did come more than two years ago
User numbers they were oh so low
Then along with Tastel, BPL it did ditch
Aurora called it "a non-commercially viable glitch"

VK7's Foundation licensees have exploded
Fourteen percent of our Tassie ham population
Our standards, advanced and trainers have grown
A welcoming trend, almost a hobby conflagration!

ATV has been flourishing
Both in the NW and the South
Regular broadcasts abound
VK7NW & VK7OTC the eyes and mouth

Not forgetting the mode they call APRS
The network has now expanded state-wide
Even Targa did see tracked cars on a screen
Digital modes are coming in on the tide

Well that's our rap for the year 2007
A very Merry VK7 Christmas and take care
For Santa's still listening
That new rig I'm sure his sleigh can bear!

(73, Justin, VK7TW with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore for yet
another horrific version of his classic Christmas tale!)

ATHOL JOHNSON CONTEST

After an absence of some 25 years, the Athol Johnson Contest will
make a return on the third weekend in February. The Athol Johnson
Contest is a VHF Contest promoting VHF Mobile Operation, lasting for
8 hours during the daylight hours. Following consultation with
previous contesters and interested parties, Ben VK7BEN has re-written
the rules to follow the old contest rules as close as possible, as
well as modernising some of the rules.

VK7BEN is also pleased to announce the inaugural John Grace Perpetual
Trophy, to be awarded as part of the Athol Johnson Contest, to the
Foundation Licensee with the most points.

Stay Tuned! Official Rules, Log Sheets will be available early in the
new year. It is hoped that we'll even have a electronic logger
available for this contest, courtesy of the VK Contest Logger
developers.

Pencil this one in your diaries now, this should be a fun days
contest.

(Ben VK7BEN, Contest Manager)

All up there are over 20 people regularly involved in the broadcasts

you for the princely sum of $0.00. Yes, we are all volunteers.

So, when you callback today why not thank the person you are calling

VHF/UHF DX Conditions

As most would be aware there has been exceptional openings on VHF &
UHF during recent times.

Wayne VK7FWAY reports very good propagation on VHF with a 2M contact
into VK4 with signals 40DB over S9.

This, using as little as 2Watts SSB!!!

The path for this QSO is around 1,648 KM. Good work Wayne.

During the week, 6m. openings were prevalent with VK7AX working
VK5APA 7km. North of Adelaide on the 6M. Repeater VK7RNW.

Signals were mostly 5&9 with a little fading.

--------------------------

SSTV Gateway Updates.

New Gateways have been established as follows….

Gateway No1. is now operational on 145.625MHz. under the call sign of
VK7AX.

These are RF ONLY links, linked to other gateways in the network such
as DB0MOR , DB0QF in Germany, HB9MNP in Switzerland and PI2EYI in the

Stations already exchanging SSTV pictures via the new gateways are
VK7JH, VK7AX, VK7XL AND VK7WP.

More gateways and stations are expected to join the network as the

NORTHERN NEWS

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club News

Welcome home to Tim, VK7TIM, partner and 1 1/2 children, home for the
holidays. Rumour has it he's anxious to climb Mt Barrow for a look-
see at whats been happening in his absence.

Joe is planning a visit to RWC to remove the sel-call switch from the
link back to RAA. Intermittent power fluctuations have been the cause
of a few problems but removing the switch will make it much more
reliable.

VK3RGL, the Mt Anakie repeater, will, in mid January, require a
91.5Hz subtone to open the mute and will be encode/decode. This
should stop them hearing RAA.

A reminder that Febuary is AGM month. Looking for volunteers for the
positions - are you interested? Contact Al if you are!

Finally, best wishes to all from NTARC. Have a happy a enjoyable
break, drive carefully, work lots of rare DX and we look forward to
hearing and seeing you all in the New Year.

Until next week

(73, David VK7YUM, NTARC Secretary)

ATV Experimenter's Group

Last Wednesday night was a good roll up to the social night.

This was a very relaxed social night...and lots of ideas and comments
for next years activities.

Again I would like to thank all those dedicated people who gave there
time to help put the ATV equipment together over the past year.

We now have a functional ATV Studio, with reliable equipment that can
only be described as a great asset to the Club.

Looking back at the year the Wednesday night group have had some very
interesting nights and visitors, we hope to see you all again in
2008. A reminder that the ATV nights will be running over the holiday
