News from the North
from 20th October 2013
sent to undisclosed recipients

> our thoughts go out to all involved fighting and surviving bushfires at the moment -
hoping that the weather turns right for you and that you are able to rebuild <

here is a dispatch from Phil/VK2JOK - along with a poster for the concert
Hi Friends of Fiddlin' Phil,
Just letting you know that we will be relocating to Lesley's parents in Bowral today
and I will be travelling to work from there. I just thought I'd send this update as
it does look a bit scary on the news if you are overseas or interstate - or even on
the other side of Sydney. I think that we will actually be OK here in Wentworth Falls,
however, as you have seen on the news, the conditions will worsen over the next few days.
If the State Mine fire near Lithgow and the Mt Victoria fire do join up and then get driven
by strong winds tomorrow, it could be a threatening situation in which case Katoomba, Leura
and Wentworth Falls will be evacuated.

I worked over the weekenI worked over the weekend to remove as much green waste as I could and prepare and also did
a run down to Penrith yesterday to store my big mixing desk, hard drives, violins and other
instruments in one of our schools - leadership at the CEO has been very supportive of
staff in fire areas.

Relocating to Bowral in a calm and easy manner will enable me to travel to work over the next
week in the knowledge that Lesley and Sasha are safe with her parents. And yes, I know that
there are fires along the M5 and Northern Road but I'll keep an eye on reports and those fires
are not nearly as threatening as the 2 big fires to the West of us here.
So...... we are fine and I can report that we will definitely be safe.

May I bring your attention to a concert happening at St Finbar's Catholic Church on Sunday November 10th.
I had planned this Chamber music concert at the Church some months ago but it will now be a benefit
concert with proceeds going to the Diocesan Bushfire Fund. This concert will feature both the
PenritPenrith/Mountains and Blacktown Captivate Orchestras as well as our Captivate Staff Chamber Orchestra.
I did the orchestration as the orchestral parts for this concerto are not published. This was at the
St Finbar's Concert last year. This concert will be even better than last year and we are hoping for
a lot of support to raise funds for the bushfire appeal.
It is mainly a primary aged orchestra and most of these students have only been learning for a few years.
It would be great if as many on this list could make it to this concert -

When: Sunday November 10th at 3 PM
Where: St Finbar's Catholic Church - Glenbrook
What: Chamber Music Concert with our Captivate String Orchestras and also our Staff Chamber Orchestra
How much: Entry by donation. This Church holds about 400 and is a beautiful concert venue

- it would be wonderful to affirm these students and teachers and raise as much as we can towards
the Bushire Appeal.

If you are also in a bushfire area, then please stay safe and our prayers are with youIf you are also in a bushfire area, then please stay safe and our prayers are with you also.

Regards, Phil VK2JOK

News from North Queensland

- You are invited to an Annual Lecture
You are invited to the inaugural Peter Lewis Arlett Memorial Annual Lecture in Power, Energy and Society
Professor Peter ArlProfessor Peter Arlett was the former Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering and
Pro-Vice Chancellor - Research. He was a significant force within James Cook University and the wider
Townsville Community. Many of his colleagues and former students now contribute to engineering in
North Queensland via a range of organisations, inspired in no small part by Prof. Arlett's enthusiasm
and unique modus operandi.
As a celebration of his contributions over many years, the IEEE North Queensland Section would like to
inaugurate an Annual Public Lecture Series, with speakers selected to present lectures on inspirational
and intellectual topics of their choice relevant to engineering in our society, with a view that Prof. Arlett
would be in judgement should they stray too far from reality.
In short, we aim for the lectures to be technically informative, but practical.
