- 21st North Queensland Amateur Radio Convention Summary
The 21st North Queensland Amateur Radio Convention was held in Charters Towers
from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th October 2013.

Charters Towers threw on some good weather for convention goers with the night time temperatures
ranging 15C to 18C and the day time temperaturs ranging 31C to 36C with a dry heat and nice breezes.
The Management, Staff and Members of the Charters Towers Golf Club looked after the hams
well - providing an excellent venue with cold drinks from the bar and some gastronomic delights from
the kitchen for the Friday Nithe kitchen for the Friday Night Meet and Greet and the Saturday Night Banquet.

A number of hams made it up to the Towers on Thursday to get settled in at the caravan park
right next door to the venue (complete with well marked trail to the bar) and to experience
the heritage shopping in the CBD.

The low key opening on Friday evening by organiser Gavin/VK4ZZ set the pace for the convention -
a chance to catch up with faces old and new with things happening at a relaxed pace.

During Saturday the Home Brew event started with several hams starting on their conversion
of Computer Power Supplies to Radio Power Supplies, whilst Don/VK4ZCQ completed work on his latest
home brew masterpiece, the Rediculously High Frequency Ionising Radiation Receiver. It ticked
when held near a few rocks outside the venue. Richard/VK4FRJG displayed his portable HF go-pack.
Dale/VK4DMC's constant travelling companion, Elmo, had a go at soldering and constructing with
some interesting results.

Wendy and Ray/VK4NET conducted their fWendy and Ray/VK4NET conducted their famous 25s and 50s boards, well patronised by convention goers.
Helpers took turns in selling raffle tickets in the Navcom Electronics donated ICOM IC-P7A transceiver
and many questions were answered in the relaxed conversations during the day.

Before too long the Saturday Night Banquet came around, with more 25s and 50s boards happening,
Lyndall/VK4ZM co-ordinating the banquet orders and delivery, John/VK4FNQT conducting the raffle for the
LG TV Box which miraculously turned into a progressive bottled white and red raffle, Mal/VK4MSS, along with
some friends acting as example props, recited bush poetry extolling the evils and virtues of drink.

Highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Ken Robertson VK4KT Memorial Award for
Outstanding Ability in the field of Amateur Experiment.
This years recipient has maintained experimentation in radio 50MHz and above the same way that
Ken Robertson/VK4KT SK and Vern Kerr/VK4LK SK did back in the 1960s, for years exploring Ken Robertson/VK4KT SK and Vern Kerr/VK4LK SK did back in the 1960s, for years exploring rare DX openings
and more common propagation paths and for a number of years now running a morning net that helps
exploit aircraft enhancement ducting and temperature inversion ducting.
In accepting the award, John Goldfinch/VK4FNQ stated that the most important thing was to be able to
share knowledge and enthuse others in getting involved with above 50MHz operations.

The Mystery Pressie Auction happened with much mirth and eager bidding. Auctioneer Snow/VK4ME prompted
the bidding with colourful descriptions of the non-descript packages. Lyndall/VK4ZM as cashier had to get
creative with a container to put all the coins from the bidding in and Gavin/VK4ZZ was way too eager
to show off the manicure set and the Dame Edna rose coloured glasses that he had won.
The most popular non-descript wrapping this year was .. polka dot !

So everyone had a heap of fun and a lot wanted to sleep in Sunday Morning - however some were eageSo everyone had a heap of fun and a lot wanted to sleep in Sunday Morning - however some were eager
to finish their power supply conversions and set out the Famous Monster Auction to see what monsters
would be worth bidding on. Many helped to set up the miles o treasure and one local driving past
thought it was a garage sale (going away with some sheets of aluminium for a couple of dollars).
So, after a scrumtious lunch from the Golf Club kitchen, hams and support crews gathered under the
trees to hear Auctioneer Snow/VK4ME, ably assisted by cashiere Bob/VK4AAH and a couple of burly barrel girls,
to start bidding on such diverse apparatus as boxes of valves,
camp oven cookers/smokers, some HF transceivers, rolls of coaxial cable, laptop computers, test equipment,
some VHF and UHF transceivers, an original Tandy electronic chess game set, some yagi and whip antennas,
a bar fridge that has a few stories behind it, motor control gear and much much more.
The auction went from around 1pm to 4pm and was very entertThe auction went from around 1pm to 4pm and was very entertaining, including telephone bids and bids
from the parapet to liven things up.

At the end of the Monster Auction the Convention Raffle for the Navcom Electronics donated
ICOM IC-P7A dual band transceiver was drawn. John/VK4FNQ put his hand into the big container
full of tickets and drew out the lucky winner - Lyndall/VK4ZM.

The Golf Club was presented a framed certificate of thanks, the big clean-up and pack-up took place
and some hams headed off for places far away, whilst others went next door or up the road.

The North Queensland Net was beamed live to the world on 80metres on Sunday evening with net control
situated at the VK4MSS QTH in Chassers Daks. Good reception conditions aided a lot of hams who had
to travel some distances back home to call in to say that they made it home safely.
Amongst those who travelled long distances to be at the Convention included Maureen and Paul/VK4ZJD
from Tully Heads, Elmo, Tara and Dale/VK4DMC from Atherton anfrom Tully Heads, Elmo, Tara and Dale/VK4DMC from Atherton and Bill/VK4XZ from Maleny.
A lot of hams from Far North and Central Queensland were conspicuous by their absence.

Attendance numbers for the Convention were down markedly - this is a growing trend and will be taken
into account when the decision is next made whether or not to hold the next
North Queensland Amateur Radio Convention.

Thanks though to everyone to attended and helped with running the Convention.

(Gavin/VK4ZZ)
