It is to do with the hst2008 hst@hst2008.org

The Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club participated in the RALLY De FEMMES
and say this would have to have been one of the easiest rally's to assist with
communications wise.
Only three stages, all run three times making a total of nine stages.
So you stayed put for all of the rally, this gave plenty of time to
set up positions and make changes during the running of the rally to
improve creature comforts or make adjustments to antenna locations etc.
With only 16 competitors the stages went fairly quickly and being a
lady drivers event no incidents to speak of, unlike their male counterparts.
A job well done to Jeff VK1FJPP who did his first stop control.
Darren VK1HFC and Peter VK1NFI handled the travellers net between them.
This all would not happen with out the sterling efforts of Phil VK1ZPL
as chief organiser.

Redcliffe and District Radio Club
As you heard in last week's news the Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club decided to
provide the chance of winning one of two Foundation scholarships to scouts
and cubs who visited the club station during the JOTA weekend.
The Committee decided that the winners are Lauren and Shaun Kelley both of
Kallangur Scout group.
President of the Club, David VK4FDRC, presented the scholarships at Monday's
club meeting and said how proud he was to offer two fine young people the
chance to enter the world of amateur radio.
The children's parents Anita and Gary Kelley were also present and were
excited about their children's' awards.
Gary said that the thing that really got his son hooked on amateur radio was
one of the crystal sets that the club made available during the JOTA weekend.
It now appears that Dad and maybe even Mum, will join the children to undertake
their Foundation licence course in early February next year.

NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE
GERMANY: HAM RADIO KICKED OFF OLYMPIC TOWER SITE
Using to much electric power may have cost a popular group of
repeaters serving Munich, Germany it's site. This, as one group of
hams who control access by other radio amateurs to Munich's Olympic
Tower radio site have essentially kicked the brother radio amateurs out.
The group in question is the V-F-D-B. The V-F-D-B is described as a
parallel amateur radio organization to the German national society the
D-A-R-C. It represents hams that work for, or used to work for, the
German telecommunications authority. They have their own local clubs
that "compete" with the D-A-R-C local clubs, although in most ways
they cooperate and sort of claim to be part of one family. Since the
V-F-D-B has a direct connection with the authorities or past
authorities, they arranged to be the national renter of repeater site
properties at subsidized prices.
And now the V-F-D-B is claiming that the hams who operate repeaters at
the Olympic Tower are using far to much resources such as electric
power and had ordered Rainer Englert, D-F-2-N-U, and his repeaters out
of the site. This, even though they are the most popular systems
serving the Munich area and includes the 5th highest traffic EchoLink
repeater used worldwide, as well as a new D-Star repeater.
According to one source, some dialog was opened between the V-F-D-B
and D-F-2-N-U. Then a closed meeting without Englert was held on
December 4th to determine the fate of the repeaters on the Olympic
Tower. The outcome was a decision to shut everything down. There was
no discussion, no reasons given.
The user group that supports the repeaters say the move was purely
political. They say that their next step will be to consult with their
lawyers and at the same time to look for a repeater site that is not
under V-F-D-B's control.

RSGB NEWS G4NJH
A new beacon, GB3SSS, is operating on 3597kHz from Poldhu in Cornwall during
the winter months. The purpose is to investigate propagation between Poldhu
and St Johns, Newfoundland, during a sunspot minimum. This will help determine
how Marconi's signals were able to cross the Atlantic on that famous afternoon
in 1901.
The transmission format is the same as the 5MHz beacons and last year's
1.96MHz GB3SSS beacon. Transmissions last one minute and start at zero,
15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour. A callsign is followed by two sets of 6dB
power steps, then a PSK31 message starting at the 30 second boundary.
Software used for the 5MHz beacons can be used for decoding and this is
available for download from www.rsgb-spectrumforum.org.uk.
Power is 15dBW to an 80m dipole. Reports should be sent to gb3sss@yahoo.co.uk,
and further details are on the Poldhu Amateur Radio Club web site at
www.gb2gm.org.

IRELAND: FIRST 500 KHZ TRANSATLABTIC QSO COMPLETED
The first transatlantic contact on 500 kHz between amateur
experimental stations has taken place. The evening of November 13 saw
U-S experimental station WE2XGR and GI4DPE in Northern Ireland
communicate for about 15 minutes using standard-speed CW.
On that same night, US experimental stations WD2XSH 12 in Colorado and
WD2XSH 20 in Oregon made the first contact in the western half of the
United States.
WD2XSH is the ARRL 500 kHz experimental license. It was issued in
September 2006 and has 19 active stations. WE2GXR is licensed to
Warren Ziegler, K2ORS, of Wayland, Massachusetts. Fritz Raab, W1FR,
in Vermont, serves as experimental project manager for The 500 KC
Experimental Group for Amateur Radio. Its website is on line at
www.500kc.com
And less we forget, if Warren Ziegler's callsign, K2ORS, sounds
familiar, its first holder was the late American humorist Jean
Shepherd. The same Jean Shepherd that gave us all the holiday classic
motion picture "A Christmas Story." According to his listing on
QRZ.com, Ziegler was a big fan of the original K2ORS.
