GREETINGS FOR CHRISTMAS 2012 AND THE NEW YEAR 2013.
From all RAFARS Council/Post Holders, Members and News Desk to all past
and present RAFARS Members including your XYL, OM, YL and Partner.
Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year with Health, Happiness and Good
Fortunes for 2013, particularly those of you who may be on overseas
detachment/postings and on active service commitments, and to those of
you who are sick or maybe now on your own over this holiday period.

NEW AND REJOINED MEMBERS.

A COMBINED SERVICES NET ON 5MHZ.
For the past two months RAFARS members have been trialling a short 5 MHz
Net on Sunday morning at 0900 local on channel FM = 5.403.50 MHz USB.
Alternate frequency is FE = 5.398.50 MHz.
The net is now Tri-service and Europewide with the regular assistance of
Graham OZ2RAF and call-in by other RNARS, RSARS and RAFARS members.
The net is established with a view to allow members the opportunity to
experience the band and to reflect on the respective propagation paths
between participants in comparison to other frequencies available.
Most operators on the net are familiar with operating on 5MHz and other
non-amateur frequencies in their service lives.
The net typically exists for about half an hour and the controller is who-
ever grabs the microphone first or he who has the best general reception.
The 5 MHz channels are limited to those radio amateurs who hold a full
licence and have the appropriate NoV. For that reason I will be using my
Sunday callsign G0TAK.
If you cannot join us, please listen on the frequency and send a report to
me g0tak@kencomp.net
This may be the first time that a tri-service net has been established,
let us hope that it continues to be a success.

RAFARS 75TH ANNIVERSARY ON MONDAY 1ST OF APRIL 2013.
Next year RAFARS is 75yrs old. It would be appreciated if RAFARS members
make a big effort to tell the world by either putting on a SES or a write
up in your local Papers/Journals. Do not leave it too late - only a month
till January 2013 and, do not forget, it takes at least a couple of months
to organise a SES and magazines (Radcom etc) require 2 months notice.
RAFC Cranwell, RAF Locking and RAF Cosford, the home of HQRAFARS for some
part of the last 75 years, will be our main operating locations on April
1st. Anyone who puts a SES on the air for the RAFARS 75th Anniversary,
please ask all stations worked if they require a QSL Card or not, and the
system they wish to use; via the Bureau, via Services or direct by means
of a SAE. This will save lots of cards being destroyed, RAFARS will create
the cards once we have an idea how many cards need to be printed.
Do not forget to inform News Desk and AOTA (G4DQP) so that a list can be
produced of the SES expected to be on the Air during Bank Holiday Monday
1st April, or at other times that fit in with your year planner. Do not
forget to inform the RSGB RadCom editor as well.
Suggest we work HF on 80m and 40m as Primary bands and stick to the RAFARS
frequencies if possible.

QAP FOR OZ2RAF/OZ1QV AND 9H3SW.
I have been fortunate in being able to obtain a rare two letter call sign,
so I am now using OZ1QV (Queen Victoria). In addition, I have been granted
OZ2RAF which I use exclusively for RAFARS nets and related activities.
I will still keep my old call signs G3RPD and OZ1KGV, but use them rarely.
As far as I know, I am the only RAFARS member living in Denmark

Also QAP FOR 9H3SW Bernard G0SWO may be on the air from 9H3SW if he can
make it, he hopes to be on 20m or 40m

GB2RAF AIR DEFENCE RADAR MUSEUM RAF NEATISHEAD RAFARS PERMANENT S.E.S.
De-brief Sat 10 Nov 2012. 65 Stations worked. No RAFARS on the 1100A Nets.
Most of the day we remained on 40m 7.140 with pile ups and also with a
contest which started at 1200hrs. Thanks to Henry M0ZAE for all his help
in operating the station. Only 3 RAFARS Member worked G2AFV G0EYJ MW1ARM.
I was unable to go on 20m CW at 1200 due to a pile up on 40m SSB.
But a good day with so many stations on the air due to the U.K Winter WX
now setting in the Bands get many more UK stations on the air.
I was unable to go on 7.055 due to CW Contest and data traffic.
CQ CW DX 14.055 at 1200A see above.
GB2RAF will be operational normally every 2nd Sat of the month. Primary
frequency is 3.710Mhz but if 80m is down we can be found on 7.055Mhz
but 7.100Mhz plus is the best for contacts over the last year.
The station will be operating 1 April 2013 instead of the 2nd Sat of April
2013.
Any RAFARS Member can operate the station with a class A licence but
contact Terry G4PSH first to clear it with RAFARS Membership and the
Museum Manager.
GB2RAF is for RAFARS Members to operate whenever you wish on Tues, Thurs
or the 2nd Sat of every month 1000-1600hrs. The equipment is a IC736
100w into a Inverted V Trap Dipole for 20 40 80m.

SAD NEWS ON PACKET.
It is now becoming very difficult to send out the RAFARS NLs via Packet
this is due to the times, as there is hardly anyone on Packet anymore with
lots of BBSs closing down even GB7VLS GB7LDI and GB7MAX
will not be on the air much longer one reason is due to the internet.
However I will still send the NLs out until such times I am unable to
access any BBSs anymore.
