News from North Queensland

- Horsies and Radio this weekend
As the news goes to air this morning some radio operators are
wrapping things up at the North Queensland Equestrian Centre following
a successfull communications support exercise for the Townsville Endurance and
Arabian Horse Society Bluewater Classic Endurance Ride.
The Radio Operators were at Ride Base on 10am Saturday and received a final briefing
before heading out position at checkpoints near the Bluewater airstrip and

within Bluewater Cattle Station.
The horse riding started at 1-45pm with the 6km and 20km competitors riding through the
afternoon to finish up by 5pm. The 40km and 80km riders also started out during Saturday
afternoon with all the 40km riders having to get back to Ride Base by sunset lest
their horsies turn into pumpkins, and the 80km riders utilising the good riding
conditions during Saturday Night to make it home well.
Communications support was provided by members of theTARCinc utilising 2metre simplex
and UHF-CB point to point along with volunteers from TERAHA using UHF-CB to call in riders
from checkpoints closer to Ride Base. The Ride Base operator also utilised UHF-CB to
make Strapper Alert calls to alert the strapping crews that their horsie was only 5km out
from home.
This event concluded the extensive TARC Comms Support Calendar for 2012, however
there are more Comms Support events already planned for 2013. If you
can help out then please contact Gavin/VK4ZZ on mobile 0427182469 or on email

- Jeckle has your patch needs catered for
John/VK4JKL advises that he has some 2nd hand (but not used) Male N
fittings to suit FSJ4-50B, a 1/2" hardline made by Andrew.
Numerous types include 44ASW, F4NM-C, etc.
These were/are attached to short lengths of patch cable
pre-assembled by Andrew factory, (with shrink sleeve) ranging from 3' to 6'.
John also says that the other end are DIN, not much use for VHFers but good scrap brass.
John can easily remove the tail if not required, or cut the connector off for
cheaper transport. ...$5 each. Cheaper by the Bakers dozen.
