Hi Jim,

Ubuntu, Kubuntu & Knoppix are all Debian based, so if you're familiar with
the package handler in Ubuntu you'll have nothing to learn if you choose
Debian.

I've been running Debian systems for 16 years and although difficult to
handle in the past, I believe it is now no more difficult than anything
else.

My bbs (fbb/fpac/xastir aprs) machine runs Debian v4.0 with all updates.
Given that it's only a P300, any slowdowns would be quite evident but I've
not noticed any. My test machine is a P700, also with Debian v4.0, with all
updates.

I ran Kubuntu (7.04) on the test machine for a while and it, too, was fine.

I don't know how Linux savvy you are, but if you're shakey, pick the same
distro as a nearby elmer so that help is more available.

Cheers ... Ray vk2tv
