Last month at the Atlanta Linux Festival I spoke with a member of the 
Ubuntu Kernel Development Team and told him about the problems caused by
the depreacation of the fsdev device system. Stephan assured me that the Team is aware of the problem and will be looking at methods to make the fsdev devices available w/o having to resort to recompiling the kernel.

I don't have any contacts with the Debian people, but I see a good deal of attention being paid to the needs of the HAM Radio community by Linux developers.
If aynone has contacts within the Debian Org I urge them to communicate the 
need for continued fsdev support in the basic kernel.
