Hello Om oM OM om,

I have had succcess with Kubuntu a multimedia version of Ubuntu.

Once you download the Live version to a CD or if you Google it - to a hard drive partition, it runs as smooth as Windows. You can use various windows managers that will either speed up or slow down your systemk depending on age (memory etc.)

The best one I found for me was fluxbox, it has all the features by click of mouse and loads the system in under 3 seconds.

The main package loader for Ubuntu and Kubuntu is Adept. The system self updates and upgrades without anything but a mouse click

i have a Baycom Modem on a serial port and this is how I did it so far...
In Adept download all the Amateur Radio packages
Open Adept and download from there - a mouse click
open an editor on Kubuntu and type the following
sudo
/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS0 baud_base 115200 auto_irq skip_test autoconfig
stty crtscts -F /dev/ttyS0
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
sudo modprobe hdlcdrv
modprobe baycom_ser_fdx
sethdlc -p -i bcsf0 mode "ser12*" io 0x3f8 irq 4
sethdlc -i bcsf0 -a txd 220 slot 50 txtail 50 ppersist 180 half
ifconfig bcsf0 hw ax25 m1evn-5 up

this is my call sign m1evn-5
It is vital you keep the suffix you attach the same as in all files you modify
Now open a file manager (windows explorer kind of thing)
steer your mouse to /etc/ax25/ax25d.conf
and modify all the call signs to your own
now save it
Steer to /etc/ax25/axports
and modify it as thus
ax25	m1evn-5	1200	255	2	144.950 MHz (1200 bps)
Save it
ax25 is the name I call my ham radio port - you can call yours anything or something
Save it
Now open a Terminal (that's a DOS screen kind of)
and type the following

bash s
s is the name I saved the file with all those initial parameters I wrote at the top of this screed
Your Baycom is now functioning
oh yeah press enter

In the terminal type axlisten
you will now see packet data
if you type man axlisten you will see how

in another terminal type call ax25 gb7XXX
Now you will be connected to yo favorite BBS
once connected type ~o
and a logfile of your contact will be created and you can read those packets in any editor.
When i set up the unproto I will send a SB

regards

Joe
