The biggest hurdles to overcome when contemplating a move to Linux are:
1. Not all hardware manufacturers produce Linux drivers for their devices.
Printers are just one example and, whilst the Linux community has done a
brilliant job producing drivers for such devices, in some cases not all
functions of that device function. My Epson Photo R230 has third party
Linux drivers but the CD label print facility doesn't work. My Brother
HL-2040 Laser printer has drivers supplied by Brother. Some "cheap" sound
cards aren't supported either. Check for drivers before you buy.
2. There isn't always a Linux equivalent for your "favourite" program, and
not all Windoze programs will function under wine. If there was a Linux
equivalent of Cool Edit Pro I wouldn't still be using Windoze.
Since at least Ubuntu (Kubuntu) 7.04 the installation has been almost
painless. I'm sure that other distros are equally friendly, but I haven't
tried them.
