Thanks for the info you provided Andy. I did download Debian Lenny and it
installed OK on my USB drive - quite easily. Booting it still failed,
although it found the GRUB details on the USB master boot sector on
/dev/sdb1 and hung unable to execute :
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-686 root=/dev/sdb1 ro quiet
So the pc finds the USB drive to do the GRUB, but then fails to find the
boot files! Weird. I suppose I could install GRUB on the MBR on the
master disk but I suspect it will still get lost. This has happened on
my AMD64 even with the HD installed as a slave IDE.
Dunno what to try next.
