Thanks Warren for the thoughts

I tried a big spring up high inside and putting a pulley on the pot with a
string round it going to the pedal, but it made the pedal spring loaded
and everything kept fading to silence as I forgot to keep the pedal
depressed whilst playing.

30 years habit of just setting the thing as I played is a bit hard to
break.

It also tended to slip when I got a bit carried away and operated the
pedal rapidly.

OK on the machining, there is hardly enough left of the rack in one piece
for the glue to stick to. I have recoverd as many of the bits as I can
find and I might end up hand filing one out of a piece of brass if all
else fails.
