Just you methinks. No problems here. I can pin the 384k/4Mbps link I have
here to end stops either way, up or down.

Only if you are attempting to connect to sites hosted in those parts. Even
then sites with domain addresses in the affected areas of the middle east
may actually be hosted in EU or the USA.

Very little internet traffic goes via satellite. The extra 72000 km the
signals travel adverse affect response times. Most goes via undersea cable.
There's about 8Tbps capacity between the UK and Europe with traffic
averging at 2.9Tbps. If the backbone routing is done right with dynamic
routing then when the cable to Egypt and hence beyond died, packets should
start taking the "long path" and go via the USA, Asia and back through
India to the Middle East. One alledged problem has been that Indian telcos
have not provided enough capacity to handle the reverse routing.
