Hi Ray and all,

Now that you jogged my memory it was Electro Voice components we used, I
don't remember the midrange but the tweeter was something they called
VHF. We got the prints from the now defunct Speaker Lab and one's father
having a machine shop in the basement we set about building replicas of
the Voice Of The Theatre. One interesting note (sic) is that in order to
get flat frequency response the woofer's natural resonance must be
cancelled by the resonance of the enclosure. This is accomplised by
measuring it with a signal generator and RMS voltmeter using standard
methods. Once the frequency is found the internal measurements of the
enclosure are calculated to match. Yup, the enclosures must not vibrate
and produce odd resonances so plywood is out of the question, we used
solid oak with cross bracing, very expensive and weighed a ton but the
best sounding speakers in captivity were the result. At first we had
ideas of Klipsch corner horns but when we calculated the dimensions we
realized we lacked both funds and real estate for those monsters! (;->)

Ray, you move monster speakers the same way you move high power broadcast
transmitters, with broomsticks. I've carted several out of transmitter
sites diverting them from the scrap heap to the ham shack using the
ancient Egyption method and it works provided you bring along a few
slaves to carry the iron. I packed the fire bottles, never trust slaves
with glass.
