For those interested in modern marvels check out the Kalgoorlie Super Pit
on Google.

A number of small mines were bought out by an enterprising mining group
and an excavation started where the old deep mines were situated.
The pit is at present 360 metres deep (1000 feet) and will finally be 3.8
km long and 1.35 km wide and 500 metres deep.

What they will do with it when all the gold has gone is an interesting
question!!

If you zoom in on the picture you can see the huge ore trucks at the
bottom of the pit - looking like Monopoly houses in size and the haulpaks
which have tyres taller than their driver but look like tiny boxes. In the
sides of the pit can be seen the shafts from the old mine - not visible in
the Google picture.

Meekathara and Westonia both also have a big pit but not on the same scale
as Kalgoorlie.Meekathara 's workings are to the south of the township,
more than one small pit. Hard to pick out among the salt lakes.

Westonia's is very hard to see also as the definition and focus of that
area are very poor. However it is just north of the township. Water is a
problem at Westonia. The deep mine there has been opened and closed more
than once owing to water filling the mine from underground streams and the
pumps not able to cope. Even in the open cut there is a water problem and
I heard a few days ago that the mine may be closing becuse of this. It
costs more to keep the water out than is received from the sale of gold
from the mine. This is what I was told but I have no way of confirming
this.
