Hi readers to this header...

I must agree.
Before jumping to conclusions, and taking "modern technology" sound
systems into account, some time back, I decided to do a survey on bass
sound.
Knowing that the bass sound must be deep, round, and must stand up to it's
name BASS. I felt one MUST get that guttural rumbling effect in your
stomach especially when an open B string is plucked..... oh how soothing !
NB This does not necessarily mean that it must be loud !
I found that a nice deep sound is reached when the windows of my house
start rattling at LOW volume - probably not a good test, but it works for
me !
I've been playing electric bass for 40 years and been there, tried that,
had the T shirts printed, and finally reached the conclusion that...

(That's my boy Ray - you tell em) !
I've been attached to many groups over the years, all of which played
different music and ofcourse over the years interesting styles developed,
and some became popular, interesting and pleasing to the ear.
From this, I gained a lot of experience but it alls boils down to BASS and
the true meaning in what the word BASS stands for.
I shudder when I see a fella playing "bass" on the G, D and A strings half
way up the fingerboard (THAT'S NOT BASS - that's a drunk classical
guitarist that picked up the wrong instrument) !!!
Not to mention - it sounds gross ! (except to him) !
Unfortunately, having the right bass sounds, has it's misfortunes (nice
pun) ! I have come to the conclusion (with years of intensive studying,
monitoring, listening and surveying), that only a big resonant bass cab
will give the "right" bass sound. This is most unfortunate for the duo in
which I am attached, as we regularly play in small venues like ladies'
bars, restaurants and small pubs. (Big rowdy pubs are great as we can
really pump up the volume and only at a certain volume does the 18" bass
speakers really kick in, and kick butt) !! (I think one could compare this
effect with the power bar of a motor vehicle).
Sadly, cabs with 12" speakers do not fit the bill here, and 15" speakers
are on the threshold. I say "sadly" because it would be much more
convenient to cart and carry smaller equipment around. Oh, not to mention,
most of the venues mentioned above, do not have enough space to
accommodate my nice sounding arrangement, and as luck would have it, the
nicest venues are those situated two or three stories high WITHOUT a lift
or escalator :-(
For the record, my bass equipment comprises of the following:
For low frequency tones / response, I use ...
2 x seperate 18" bass speakers in matching resonant cabs.
2 x midrange cabs (each has a 1 x 12", 1x 15" and bullet type tweeters).
I also slave into a 600 watt PA, and ofcourse, I play a 5 string active
Ibanez SG range electric bass guitar.

(There's many occasions whereby people would come up to the stage and
compliment us on our nice sound).

>> Forget about bookshelf speaker systems

Agreed - read above.

Ray you said "when it comes to bass response", so I won't add comment
here.
(I've already been "flagged" for saying something, that someone took the
wrong way or the way he preferred to take it). So I have to walk carefully
in my pathway.

Hope (for those of you that read my message), found it of some interest.

Regards
