The author that I mentioned in the last bulletin was Patsy Adam-Smith.
She was a very prolific writer of historical books.
She was a radio operator on merchant ships.
She wrote many books on railways and ships as well as some books on POWs and
stories of returned servicemen.
However I cannot find the name of the book of hers that I read about
Cape Horn. It really was horrifying in some passages about men falling
overboard and making a grab for the log but missing it.
Their mates would stand looking at them disappearing into the distance and
knowing that the ship could not be turned around to pick them up.
No wonder they got drunk in port and to alter a sea shanty about them is a
really dishonable thing to do.
