I find CCleaner does a very good job and free, but the best way is to do the
Registry Editing after backing up your registry just in case.

Rather than RegEdit, I prefer to use Registry Crawler. It is amazingly fast at
searching through the registry for all entries of a specific search string,
listing them all in one panel, so you can give them a quick eyeball prior to
deleting them all in one go, rather than RegEdits one at a time.

I have had this so long I cannot even remember whether it was free or pay
software. I suppose you would type in as the search string 'Norton'.

AVG is supposed to be a good anti virus and free. I personally use Avira which
is also free, but both offer free updates - Avira updates are daily. I swapped
to the later when there were a few issues a while ago with AVG.
