I had Norton some years back but got rid of it when they started demanding
money on a periodical basis. The program at that time seemed to work OK. 
I used a freeby called Inoculan for a while which seemed to work OK and
then MacAfee for a while. Then I found AVG and used that for a few years
till I discovered Avast which is better still.Personally I would say that
these programs should not be necessary in a normal society, but while we
have vandals whose main occupation seems to be devising viruses that can
cause a lot of damage to systems they are necessary. The best AV action
would be to round them up, remove their toenails with a hot iron and put
them on a desert island for a few years.
