I have just done the SP3 patch on 3 mains PC's and one Vaio laptop. All
intel processors. No problems on the 3 mains powered PC's, using the full
SP3 download file.
However the laptop was different. First, SP3 refused to run because the
laptop was on battery power! It had 1h 33m of power available. So plug in
the PSU. Run SP3 again. After as minute of thinking about it, it stopped
with a report that it could not be installed until a particular KB******
update was removed. (I cant rememebr the exact one.) Go to control panel
and find the update. Click remove, and it then reported a dire warning
with a long list (about 30+) of programs that may not work if I removed
this update, including IE7, Media player, outlook etc.
So I decied to not remove the update and do the update on-line instead.
This started up and then stopped with an error message. That same update
that needed to be removed.
OK so I took a deep breath and uninstalled that update. Ran SP3 from the
full file. It completed OK. The laptop re-booted TWICE (unlike the mains
machines that only re-booted once).
I then did a windows update check and it needed one new update just as the
mains powered PC's did.
Job done after an hour.
