I'm sorry but this is incorrect. There was no problem with AMD processors.
The problem was typically with some HP desktop systems. Even though these
were built using AMD CPUs, HP generated a version of XP for their users
that told Windows to load an Intel driver. However, the driver was not
installed in the disk image. The result was Windows tried to load the
driver, failed and continued silently.
SP3 online updates takes a quick and dirty view to updating. The full CD
version of SP3 checks which CPU you have, updates the drivers and updates
the registry. The online one sees the registry key for the Intel driver and
simply installs the driver without checking if it should be installed.
Loading this driver will cause an AMD machine to BSOD or reboot randomly.
The next reboot after SP3 update results in problems for these HP owners.
Issuing incorrect advice about things like this will only further confuse
some of the packet users who really haven't got a clue about computers. It
would be really nice if people were to check the accuracy of such
statements before sending them to the (dwindling) packet community.
